Melbourne-based cosmetic physician Dr Feldman’s much sought-after dermal filler treatments are requested regularly in her South Yarra (Melbourne) and Perth clinics. The process is easy: a small amount of dermal filler is injected into the designated area, filling out and smoothing the complexion.

Sometimes substances are used that increase the volume and definition, such as lip fillers for lip augmentation or cheek fillers for cheekbone enhancement. The procedure for dermal fillers takes less than half an hour, with results being immediate and patients being able to resume normal activities straight away.

Dermal Filler FAQs

What are dermal fillers made of?

All dermal fillers, regardless of the brands Dr Feldman uses, are made of a safe, clear gel consisting of a non-animal-based natural sugar compound. This substance is found in the skin naturally but depletes as we age.

How and where is the dermal filler injected?

All facial or dermal fillers are administered in Dr Feldman’s office. Patients return home or back to work straight after the procedure. It is highly recommended that you choose an experienced doctor who specialises in filler injections for safety and to achieve optimal results.

What is hyaluronic acid?

Hyaluronic acid is an extremely popular substance and is used not only in injectables, but in topical creams, due to its volumising effects. It’s a natural substance that is found throughout your body, giving volume to skin, lubricating the joints and even giving the eyes their shape. The hyaluronic acid used in dermal fillers is stabilised for longevity. It is not of animal or human origin.

How long does the treatment take?

Generally a treatment takes under 30 minutes. The time can differ depending on the area/areas being treated and the correction desired.

Are dermal/facial fillers painful?

For most, the injections are relatively painless. All fillers contain local anaesthetic, so after the initial injection the local area becomes anaesthetised. Subsequent injections are not as painful.

When will I see the results?

You will see the results of your dermal filler injection immediately. There is likely to be a brief period of swelling or redness (approximately 20 min).

What will I look like immediately after the injection?

You will be slightly red and puffy around the injected area for a short period of time. Your complexion will be instantly smoother and more wrinkle-free than before.

Can dermal fillers be removed?

If the results of the treatment are unsatisfactory, it is possible to safely remove the filler. All that is required is for an injection of a safe, naturally occurring enzyme into the recently injected area. It is extremely rare for this to be performed, but it gives patients peace of mind to know that reversal is easily achieved.

Are there any dermal filler side-effects?

Reactions to dermal fillers are extremely low. After treatment, some reactions may occur, but these are more injection-related, such as swelling, bruising or soreness at the actual injection site. Typically, they are not a result of the hyaluronic acid and they resolve on their own within a couple of days on the skin. For lips, sometimes it may take a couple of days for swelling to subside.

How long will the effects last?

Injectable fillers last for about 6 to 18 months in most areas of the face. We find that it tends to last up to about two years under the eyes. The length of time the treatment lasts is highly dependent on many factors, such as lifestyle, age, structure of your skin, the desired aesthetic outcome and the skill of the practitioner administering the injection.

We recommend touch-ups and follow-up treatments, as they add to the duration of the effects. Most individuals decide to have a new treatment within a year of the first injection. For those addressing wrinkles and folds, a follow-up treatment is usually performed after six months.

What will I look like without further injections?

Results will gently fade away as the (100% natural) hyaluronic acid is reabsorbed into the body. Your skin will take on the appearance it had before the injections. Therefore, follow-up injections will be required if you prefer to maintain the correction.

Do I need any additional or alternative treatments to fillers?

Depending on your desired outcome and condition, there may be alternative options to choose from. For example, anti-wrinkle injections may be suggested to minimise the appearance of wrinkles. Alternatively, surgical procedures may be suggested for those with more severe signs of ageing. A suture facelift, eyelid surgery or a forehead lift may be recommended. Dr Feldman may recommend additional treatment for you to have in tandem with your facial fillers, such as glycolic or TCA peels.
