There are various areas on the back that respond well to liposuction in Melbourne by female cosmetic surgeon Dr Feldman (South Yarra), and often, not a lot of fat needs to be removed. For example:
- Upper back liposuction to remove back fat around the bra strap area
- Liposuction for the base or back of the neck, also known as an upper thoracic hump or “Buffalo Hump”
- “Love handle” liposuction for the mid back and top of hip area
‘Buffalo Hump’ lipo
Some individuals develop a hump on the back of the neck/shoulder area, known colloquially as a ‘Buffalo Hump’ or ‘neck hump’. This upper thoracic hump can be the result of obesity, or from hormonal imbalances (e.g. Cushing’s Syndrome). A Buffalo Hump may present as a side-effect of drugs such as steroids or AIDS medications.
Liposuction can successfully remove the neck hump, which is essentially fatty tissue, in a procedure known as dorsocervical fat pad removal, restoring the back of the neck to its normal contours.
Upper back liposuction
Requests for upper back liposuction are common as many people, particularly women, feel uncomfortable about exposing fatty tissue in the upper back, especially when wearing bras or strappy tops. Liposuction can quickly and permanently remove excess fatty tissue from this area. Sometimes, only a small amount of liposuction is required to produce exceptionally good results.
‘Love handles’ liposuction
‘Love handles’ is the colloquial term for those extra folds of fat above the hip and around the mid-back. They are a source of concern for many, especially middle-aged people, and particularly amongst men. Fortunately, with tumescent liposuction, these ‘love handles’ can be removed permanently.

How much does liposuction cost?
The cost of liposuction will depend on the degree of back liposuction required. This is something you can discuss with Dr Feldman in detail at your initial consultation.
The procedure
Dr Feldman’s tumescent liposuction procedures are performed at a day surgery clinic in South Yarra. Her liposuction procedures do not require a general anaesthetic. Instead, only a local anaesthetic and light sedative is required. By avoiding general anaesthesia, your recovery time will be greatly reduced. For those that would prefer more sedation, twilight sedation is available.
Recovery from liposuction
Depending on the area of the back, it’s likely you will be given a compression garment to wear to help reduce swelling. A few hours after the procedure, you’ll be allowed to return home. You will only require two days off work and will be able to continue normal activities within a week.
