Talking liposuction with Dr Joni [2024]: “Knee Lipo is One of My Favourite Procedures”

I love performing liposuction on patients’ knees. Liposuction of the knees is generally difficult to treat. It takes a fair amount of experience to blend the fat above and below, so not all doctors are keen to perform the procedure. But after working at this for years, slowly gaining the skills to address all nuances, I must say I enjoy it.

So, let’s look at what I do.

It is sometimes advisable to remove the fat from the inner thigh down to the knee. The alternative is to target only the knee area — but this is best for individuals without much thigh fat.  As with all surgeries, it’s a subjective, case-by-case issue.

I remove fat from various places around the knees. For example, I may suction underneath the knee or just above the kneecap. The outer side of the knee (and surrounding areas) can also be modified with lipo. Whatever I do, though, I always focus on blending the upper and lower leg. (You can read more about leg, calf, ankle and knee liposuction here.)

I use the small cannula when working on the knee area,  consequently, the procedure takes a little longer than in other areas.

Candidates for knee liposuction

Some women and men are already at the correct weight; however, they can have fat pockets around the knees, which is genetic — and no matter how much weight they lose, the knee fat does not go.

Where is knee liposuction performed?

Knee liposuction, as with all my liposuction procedures,  is performed under local anaesthesia with additional sedation in my accredited day surgery in South Yarra. Patients are awake throughout the procedure. This way, I can move you around to ensure the procedure is achieved as planned.

What is involved in the knee liposuction procedure?

I create a few  incisions, roughly 2 to 3 mm. Then, I carefully inject an infusion of local anaesthesia into the knee fat area.  I use a cannula to suction the fat away. The incisions do not require stitches as they are small in size and only require a sterri strip.

After the procedure, you must wear a compression garment for about two weeks or longer. You can return to work within a few days and to sports within a few weeks.

Side effects

The side effects of knee lipo are usual bruising, swelling and soreness. Most of the side effects disappear in two weeks. However, the swelling can persist for one to two months.

Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
